Brief biography and candidate statement about why you would be qualified for this position:
I am currently a grad student studying Higher Education in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) program at Mason. As a Mason alumni and current professional staff with INTO Mason, I am deeply familiar with the Mason community and am passionate about making connections across campus, bridging gaps, and collaborating together to holistically support our student populations. In my history as a Mason student, I have worked as a staff member in several different departments on campus, which has given me a working knowledge of the people, processes, and potential spaces for GAPSA to capitalize on in order to enhance the graduate experience.
I am passionate about effective communication and helping to make communication accessible for diverse student populations. Grammar savvy, detail-oriented, and an avid note-taker, I would excel in the role of Director of Communications and all of its communication and marketing responsibilities for GAPSA. I currently run a bi-weekly newsletter for 8 student staff in my department related to professional development, send out mass emails to students on a regular basis, and thoroughly the tasks associated with organization and outreach.
Finally, I am passionate about people. I would thrive in collaboration with the President, Vice President, and Director of Student Life to continue to support GAPSA as a successful association at Mason. Advocacy and equity is at the forefront of my mission as part of the Mason community, and in this role I would support equitable opportunities to create space for graduate and professional students thrive personally, academically, socially, and professionally during their studies and beyond.
Will you be able to meet the time commitments and expectations of the position? Describe your availability for Fall 2017, as well as other on-going time commitments (e.g., classes, work, organizational involvement).
I currently work full-time at INTO Mason on the Fairfax campus and plan to take part-time classes in the MAIS program for fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters. I also serve regularly in my church at different times throughout the week. I feel confident I could continue to effectively manage my time and effective responsibilities, and make this role as Director of Communications a priority in my work-life-balance and priorities as a student.
